Historic Bohigas Estate

The Bohigas family has cultivated vineyards in the Anoia River valley since 1290, making this one of Catalunya's oldest wine-producing estates. Their grapes grow in limestone and clay soils about 45 minutes west of Barcelona in the Penedès region—the heartland of premium Cava production.

The estate's first sparkling wine bottling in 1870 established Bohigas as a pioneer in traditional method Cava production, and the family continues this legacy today with wines that honor centuries of winemaking expertise.

Indigenous Catalan Grapes

This Cava showcases three native varieties that define traditional Catalan sparkling wine:

  • Xarel·lo (55%): Provides structure, body, and minerality
  • Macabeo (30%): Contributes floral aromatics and fresh acidity
  • Parellada (15%): Adds elegance, finesse, and delicate fruit notes

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Pale straw-yellow color with golden hues. Fine bubbles form a constant stream and persistent crown.

Aroma: Very fresh aromas of white fruit—tart apple and pear—layered with notes of citrus rind, white flowers, and an inviting spicy bouquet from aging (cinnamon) alongside biscuits and brioche from extended lees contact.

Palate: Well-structured and surprisingly dense with substantial effervescence. Tiny, tight bubbles create a sensation of creaminess. Flavors of green apple, lemon-lime, tangerine, dried apricot, crushed rock minerality, wheat thins, and yeasty brioche repeat on the palate. Well-balanced acidity provides tension from beginning to finish, while the bubbles give volume and softness to the structure.

Finish: Balanced finish harmonizes acidity with freshness and slight volume from its low sugar content. Clean, dry, and refreshing.

Perfect Food Pairings

This versatile Spanish sparkling wine pairs beautifully with:

  • Fresh fish and shellfish
  • Paella and rice dishes
  • Spanish tapas
  • Oysters and seafood towers
  • Dried fruits and nuts
  • Fried foods and tempura
  • Sushi and sashimi
