Vibrant Art Collection at The National Club Mexican Cantina

A vibrant collection of contemporary art by acclaimed New England artists, has emerged at The National Club Mexican Cantina.  In collaboration with Judy & Steve Silverstein, I assisted with the curation of the collection to complement the warmth and vibrant energy of the interior design--from the warm yellow room to the vibrant pink room and the lushness of the exterior patio.

This collection celebrates the rich artistic talent of the region, featuring works by eight distinctive voices:

  • Jackie Reeves, whose dynamic compositions capture movement and emotion
  • Alyn Carlson, known for evocative imagery that resonates with both nostalgia and contemporary sensibility
  • Mason Terra, whose bold visual language commands attention
  • Dannie Engwert, whose collaborative work with me unites her intricate handwoven textiles with my painted pieces to create a dialogue between fiber art and painting
  • Suzanne Owayda, whose glass mosaic work explores color and form with sophistication
  • Ryan McFee, whose pieces offer fresh interpretations of familiar themes and New Bedford flavor
  • Heather Jo Davis, a talented ceramicist whose sculptural works bring tactile dimension and artisanal craftsmanship to the space
  • Sarah Jane Lapp, who creates animations, puzzles, and community art that connect people through comedy, compassion, and collaboration across multiple media

The collection is further enhanced by thoughtfully arranged groupings of handmade ceramic plates, by Renwick Tiles, displayed as curated installations that celebrate the artistry of functional craft.

A striking collection of handcrafted coconut masks, or Mascaras de Coco, gathered by the restaurant owners, Judy & Steve Silverstein during their travels throughout Mexico, adds authentic cultural depth and personal connection to the space, bridging the cantina's New England home with the rich artistic traditions of Mexico.

Each piece has been selected to create an environment where culinary and visual artistry converge. The collection reflects the South Coast's creative community while embracing the vibrant warmth of Mexican cantina culture. As guests gather to enjoy authentic flavors and hospitality, they're surrounded by artwork that sparks conversation and celebrates the creativity that makes this region unique all in the heart of historic downtown New Bedford.
